A Different Model
Approaching a traditional art gallery, even a smaller one can be a painful experience. Once the rejection letters start piling up it can be easy for even the most established to quit trying. More often than not, larger galleries struggle along with their artists to maintain a business model that can only exist on sales volume.
SMAC is developing an alternative to that traditional business model by working together with local business to transform unused wall space into new exhibition destinations. We are currently partnered with Quality Printers and are managing their gallery space, offering four shows a year. Our vision includes the opening of as many alt galleries and pop-ups in Southern Maryland as we can manage effectively.
If you are a local artist interested in showing or helping to develop another space let us know. We are also on the lookout for local business interested in deeper connections with their communities and willing to partner with us in this program. Sign up to our mailing list to stay in the know about new shows and new calls for art

ABOUT LEAH MCKINLEY
Leah attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 2008-2012 with a minor in painting and a major in sculpture. She has a husband with whom she eloped at a pizza shop on a whim one cloudy Monday afternoon. She has a toddler, two cats and a rosemary bush she has managed to keep alive for 2 years.
She is intrigued by the weird, the wacky, the dirty, the damaged and the unrefined. She seeks to replicate the beauty she often finds juxtaposed with the aforementioned attributes through portraits of different characters she has encountered.

Assemblage and collage involve the thoughtful combination of diverse elements to create something new and original. Each process differs significantly when materials are chosen, collected, and combined, but the mentality behind both techniques is to synthesize materials into a cohesive piece. Putting It Back Together will showcase assemblage and collage pieces alongside one another, combining both practices into an assembled collection of 2D and 3D wall-hung artwork.
This exhibition is open to all Southern Maryland artists and all media will be considered, but artists must utilize either assemblage and/or collage in their creations. Show will be held at a working local business, Quality Printers, so only wall-hung artwork will be accepted.
Use the form below to submit up to three pieces*. A fee of $15 will be collected from accepted artists at delivery of work. The fee will cover costs for opening reception and Best of Show prize. A simple ballot box will be available for the public to vote on their favorite work throughout the duration of the exhibition. Votes will be counted and the winner will receive a prize of $50.00 The gallery will take 25% of all sales to cover space rental fees.
